When most people think about Winnipeg, one of the first things that comes to their mind is our winters. While it is true that Winnipeg has the coldest winters out of any major city in the world (Source) Winnipeg is also home to some of the best summers anywhere. One way that Winnipeggers take full advantage of our excellent (although unfortunately short) is through the numerous multi-day festivals that attract tourist from far an wide. Whether it be the Fringe Festival, Mantioba Electronic Music Exhibition, or Folklorama, there is always some new to see and do during a Winnipeg summer.

The TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival is another one of those summer event that really defines summer in Winnipeg. The festivities last nearly 2 weeks at various venues around the city (Click Here for full schedule). Tickets can either be purchased individually for each event of in bulk through various wristbands (all of the shows seem to be divided into various series). As always the talent is top notch this year. t is important to note that you do not need to be a “Jazz” fan in order to enjoy many of the acts. Their are artists across many genres including Hip Hop, Electronic, Rock and of course, Jazz.

My top five acts of this years show are:

1) The Roots
Legendary Hip Hop group from the US. Without a doubt this years biggest act.

2) Buck 65
Canadian Hip Hop artist who has been kicking around since 1993. Has shared the stage with Moby and played Coachella. Enough said.

3) The Lytics
Winnipeg based Hip Hop group. Very talented and are gaining popularity quickly due to their single “Big City Sound Girl”.

4) Moses Mayes
Winnipeg based funk band with some jazzy and electronic elements. I was very skeptical when I first heard of them but after seeing them perform this past weekend I’m a believer.

5) Freeway & Jake One
Got his name from former Miami cocaine godfather “Freeway Ricky Ross” and used to hang with Jay-Z. Pretty badass.
