Summer is coming early this year and it’s time to go outside and enjoy one of Winnipeg’s great patios. One of my favorite things to do this time of year is to sit outside and enjoy a cold beer. I thought I would write a review of some of the patios this city has to offer. Whether you’re looking for a place to go during the day or somewhere to party at night there is something for everyone. And with this weather, we want to enjoy it while it lasts.

1) Best Nightclub Patio: Whiskey Dix

-
The patio at Whiskey Dix is one of the hot spots to go when you are looking to have a fun night out. It includes plenty of seating, bartenders and live DJ’s. I particularly enjoy this patio because it is so big and there is plenty of room to relax and have a few drinks but also to dance into the early hours of the morning. One downside to this patio is it gets packed quickly in the prime season (if your not at the club before 10:30 good luck). If you need to make a stop at the washroom after hanging out with friends outside, be prepared to wait to hang out with them again as there is usually a large line up to get back out on the patio. In addition, this patio also has a lot of cool features, like a fire cannon and a large disco ball, which adds a unique feeling to this cool outdoor alternative. Overall, this downtown patio gets two thumbs up as it is not only large, but is a patio you could spend a whole night at as it is packed with just as much fun as inside the bar.

Honorable Mentions: Tijuana Yacht Club, Mystique Nightclub
-
2) Best Lunch Time Patio: Earls Main
-
This restaurant is usually packed with people at lunch time no matter what season it is because many people who work downtown make this one of their regular restaurants (for both meetings and pleasure). During the warm summer weather, the Earls Main action shifts outside to their large, wrap around style patio. There is no better place to have a cold beer (liquid lunch?) and some food then on a hot summer day in the heart of downtown. The food (except the beet salad!) and drinks may stay just as delicious, but the experience is so much better. Just to add, the downfall of this busy patio is the parking situation. If you plan on coming for lunch on a sunny afternoon, I would probably recommend walking as the parking becomes full really fast (although Earls does kindly offer a lot of free parking for its patrons).

Honorable Mentions: Moxies MTS Centre, Joey’s Kenaston, In Fernos Bistro
-
3) Best Patio Street: Corydon
-
This is definitely one street in Winnipeg that is known for its patios. Whether you go to Saffrons, Bar Italia or one of the many other restaurants and lounges on this street, be prepared for it to be busy on a hot summer day or night. There is something about the atmosphere on Corydon because there always seems to be something exciting going on. When you spend your time on one of the patio’s you get to watch all of the action first hand because they are located right beside the sidewalk. In addition, while you’re down there you can stop and have a delicious Gelato to cool down. Hanging out on one of the patios on Corydon is definitely a must while in Winnipeg this summer and there is a taste for everyone to enjoy.

Honorable Mentions: Osborne Village

4) Most Unique Patio: Tavern United (MTS Centre Location)
-
Tavern United MTS Centre is one of the very few (if no the only) rooftop patio in Winnipeg. It is a great place to go for after work drinks, dinner before an MTS Centre event, or even an afternoon snack with family or friends. The rooftop contains plenty of heat lamps and a variety of seating (couches, stool chairs etc.) to ensure everyone is comfortable. As with just about every other patio profiled in this article, it fills up quickly during peak hours (right after work and before MTS Centre events) so make sure you show up with plenty of time to spare.
-
Honorable Mention: Confusion Corner Bar & Grill
-
5) Best Dinner Patio: Pony Corral Pier 7 (Pembina Location)
-
This restaurant has a great patio that looks onto the Red River. You can sit by one of the fires when it gets a little chilly or come with a group of friends and have a few drinks in one of the cool Tiki huts. One of the biggest benefits of this patio is it is so big, you usually never have to wait to get a seat. In addition, there is usually live music and entertainment to enjoy. Overall, the Pony Corral Pembina patio is relaxed and laidback place where you can get cheap wings, large portions and drinks.

Honorable Mention: Muddy Waters

They closed the Whiskey Dix patio for more parking.
It closed April 3rd, 2010….
@ Addie:

You’re incorrect. The Whiskey Dix patio is still open. The rumors of it closing were the product of an April Fools joke.
BAR ITALIA!!!!

Bar Italia is incl. in “Corydon”. You are right, in the summer it is a great place to be!
Nice article! For some reason drinks on a patio taste so much better.
