One of the premiere acts leading dubstep’s invasion into the mainstream is the explosive duo, Zeds Dead. After absolutely stunning Winnipeg audiences last year (an event that is still talked about among Winnipeg’s close knit dubstep community) Zeds Dead is coming back to Winnipeg’s Garrick Centre thanks to Sound Republic. Even better? They are bringing an arsenal of supporting acts (including Mat The Alien who we interviewed last year) as part of their “Living Dead Tour”.

ZEDS DEAD PRESENTS: THE LIVING DEAD TOUR 2012

-

Fresh out the lab, Zeds Dead, a/k/a/ DC and Hooks, are at it again. the “dead” of winter marks the launch of their biggest most eclectic tour to date. Beginning on February 19 in Vancouver and running through the start of May, the LIVING DEAD TOUR see’s Zeds

Dead, Omar Linx, Araabmuzik, XI, Memorecks, Mat the Alien, and Knight RIderz, travel across North America by bus with over 70+ stops along the way – including festival appearances at Ultra Music Festival, SXSW, and Coachella.

-

“THE LIVING DEAD TOUR” will mark the debut of Zeds Dead’s previously unseen stage production, which is being designed by the same team that created Skrillex’s revolutionary live-show. This will be unlike any Zeds Dead live show ever before! got goosebumps yet? no?

-

With the addition of XI (flying in from Berlin to play his unique take on dubstep alongside the Living Dead Tour), Memorecks (the newest member of the Zeds Dead family and a soon-to-be-superstar), Mat the Alien (Canadian bass-music-hip-hop-Shambhala-scratch legend), and Knight RIderz (the funkiest glitch-hop duo Canada has ever produced), THE LIVING DEAD TOUR seeks to break down genre barriers and create an audio-visual experience that Zeds Dead’s friends and fans won’t ever forget!

-

With a heavy schedule of groundbreaking releases leading up to the tour, Zeds Dead shows no signs of slowing down. THE LIVING DEAD TOUR will be preceded by THREE new ZEDS DEAD EP’s and Mixtapes, one which will be 100% free. This pre-road sonic onslaught begins with the “ADRENALINE EP” coming January 23rd on Inspected Records, followed by a free collaborative mixtape featuring unreleased songs from ZEDS DEAD x OMAR LINX, followed immediately after by another ZEDS DEAD x OMAR LINX collaboration: an EP set for release February 28th, label to be announced. Not to mention their recent smash hits, “Rumble In The Jungle” on Diplo’s MAD DECENT label and “Ruckus The Jam” on Steve Aoki’s DIM MAK Records.

-

Leading a new generation of artists without borders, ZEDS DEAD and the members of THE LIVING DEAD TOUR are on some next level shit. Ask somebody.

-

Tickets for THE LIVING DEAD TOUR are now available online at http://zedsdead.wantickets.com/ or through your local retailer

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

MTS Centre – Winnipeg, MB

Doors: 7:00PM Show: 8:00PM

Tickets (incl. GST) $53.00, $82.50 & 118.00 available at Ticketmaster

-

RAMMSTEIN, the Berlin-based band known for their incendiary live performances, will bring their brand new live production to North America this spring for 21 dates kicking off April 20th in Ft. Lauderdale. Tickets for the tour, promoted by Live Nation, will go on sale beginning Friday, November 18th and will be available at Ticketmaster.com, and LiveNation.com.

-

Demand for Rammstein’s pyrotechnic-laden performances has been so great in Europe, where they regularly play capacity level soccer stadiums, the band spent nearly a full decade without setting foot on North American shores. In December 2010, the sextet returned to North America for two sold out shows including a performance at Madison Square Garden. Rammstein followed with a 9-day trek of major North American cities in spring 2011.

-

The Los Angeles Times described the live experience as “…epic stagecraft on a Wagnerian scale, several notches up from most arena rock.”

-

The tour announcement comes on the heels of news of the band’s first retrospective release, Made In Germany 1995 – 2011, which will be available in North America (through a distribution deal between Universal Germany and Vagrant Records) on December 13. Rammstein recently released “Mein Land,” a new four-track digital single that features two new songs: the title track and “Vergiss uns Nicht” as well as remixes from BossHoss and Mogwai. A video directed by Jonas Akerlund for “Mein Land” is also currently featured Rammstein.com. Rammstein’s most recent full-length album, Liebe Ist Für Alle Da, debuted at #13 on the Billboard Top 200 in October 2009.

-

Rammstein first stormed America in 1998, touring with a set based on their Grammy-nominated breakthrough second release, Sehnsucht, featuring Du hast, the song that brought the world’s attention to the band. During their 1998 Family Values tour, praise was high, as well as indignation: band members were jailed in the US on indecency charges due to the highly provocative live show.

-

Commerce Socials seems to have really stepped up their game this year and are putting on some absolutely incredible events. For the Halloween Shocker, they sold over 1700 tickets and packed the entire Canad Inns Windsor Park complex (Cowboys, Stereo & the hotel lobby). With people still talking about that event it appears that the infamous Commerce Christmas event is poised to blow Halloween away.

-

Over 3000 people are expected to attend, tons of door prizes (including a weekend with a new Camaro), a handful of Winnipeg’s best DJ’s provided by Area Nightclub, and most exciting of all: HYPERCRUSH is headlining! I last saw Hypercrush when they were here opening for Steve Aoki last year and they know how to get a party going. As far as I know, this is the first time that Commerce Socials has brought in an international headlining act for one of their events!

-

Remember that despite the electro headlining act, this is a formal dress code event! For guys that means wearing a suit (jacket and tie) and dress shoes. For girls that usually means a nice (more classy then scandalous) dress. As well, there will be no admittance to patrons who are obviously/obnoxiously intoxicated.

-

-

Republic Nightclub Winnipeg has been on a roll lately in the electronic music scene after bringing in Laidback Luke for Halloween and Porter Robinson only a week later. On November 30th they will be keeping the party going by bringing in another fast rising star in the dance music scene, Hardwell . Winnipeg last got a taste of Hardwell’s hard hitting, big room sound when he opened for Tiësto earlier this year at the Convention Centre.

-

Personally I have been a huge fan of Hardwell since hearing him at Tiësto in April. He has pumped out some top notch remixes as well as having some first class original productions of his own. Additionally, this relatively young newcomer to the scene was recently ranked as the number 24 DJ in the world (one of the highest debuts on the coveted list). At only $20 this show is a steal and is a must if you can tough through a hungover Thursday morning at work.

A boy, who takes his love for house music very serious, is step by step and gradually becoming a leading figure amongst the younger generation of DJs. Though Hardwell could never have dreamed what lay ahead of him when starting his DJ career at the tender age of 13.

-

For the last couple of years, Hardwell’s overall talent is recognised by the dance music industry as a new, exciting and refreshing take on a scene that continues to evolve and with an apparent everlasting shelf life! If you want to describe Hardwell’s identity and musical development in one phrase then it can be no other than that he’s now arrived in the “Big Room House” sound and has created his very unique trademark as a DJ and producer.

Denver, CO based radio DJ turned touring dubstep/glitch hop producer Ben Samples is coming to Winnipeg November 12 2011 alongside Mat The Alien and a slew of local support (including DJ Hollywood Hype) for the Bass Attack massive at the Garrick Centre. Ben’s second full length album “Malbec” will be dropping on November 8th so expect to hear a ton of fresh new tracks as well as some of his seasoned tour favorites that have rocked crowds across the continent.

-

WinnipegNightlife.Ca is beyond excited to have had the opportunity to get a brief interview with Ben. Check out what he has to say about his recent experience at Shambhala, his influences and what we can expect to hear when he is in Winnipeg!

-

1) I heard you had the chance to play at Shambhala this past year. How would you describe that experience?

-

Shambhala was one of the most unique and fun festivals that I’ve ever been lucky enough to experience. The fans that attended were more dedicated than any of the typical American festival-goers and all the music was of high caliber. I hope that I’m lucky enough to return again next year.

2) Electronic music is definitely evolving at a rapid pace. Where do you see the genre going in the next five years? What types of changes have you noticed up until now?

-

I think that most of the music in the last 5-10 years has been advanced with technology. With computers and the software that is being developed, pretty much any kid can go out and start making music, so people are gonna start being more critical of music. Dance music is dance music though, so you’ll still see bass-centered music that makes you wanna move, the fans are just gonna get tired of hearing the same sounds before too long and technology is gonna give us the ability to make the next sounds you want to hear.

-

-

3) After listening to a few of your mixes, I noticed that you make great use of samples spanning a wide variety of genre’s. What type of music did you grow up listening to and who would you consider to be your influences?

-

I’ve pretty much gone through phases were I’ve listened to every type of music, including indie, hip hop, techno, metal, alt rock, etc. As a kid I really dug guitar rock (because I played guitar) and metal, when I went to college I became more into experimental and indie/underground and that evolved into dance music and bass music. Since I used to street team when I worked for radio, I went to 3+ shows a week for about 2 years. After that I just kinda kept up my attendance at shows so I’ve seen most touring acts and live shows. That being said, it opens me up to putting on a good show regardless of genre or whether its a DJ or band.

4) What can Winnipeg expect to hear from you on November 12 when you come to town with Mat The Alien?

-

Its always hard to say because my direct influences can vary from time to time, but lately I’ve been working more breaks and electro into my set so that in an hour I’ll play dubstep, house, breaks, glitch hop, crunk, RnB, and hip hop. I pretty much play all original too, so I try to keep it moving and a fun party-atmosphere

Official Website: http://www.operaultralounge.ca/

-

Opera Ultralounge will be a first for many things in Winnipeg. Fridays will be strictly 21+ with priority access for those over 25 years old. DJ Imaculat will be providing the tunes and the club will try and provide a mature and welcoming environment for young professionals and party animals alike (and those in between). Opera Ultralounge is centrally located right on Main Street in the historic Exchange District (the old Mystique Nightclub location). There will be tons of places to sit and lounge for those who prefer a more intimate setting but also so space for those who want to dance.

-

-

As of now Opera Ultralounge will not be open for regular business on Saturday’s (which seems slightly strange at first glance but I am willing to bet they either have something in the works or the venue will be available for special events etc.) but Sunday nights will be when the club is open to the 18+ crowd. This also represents the first time that the MLCC has allowed an establishment to regularly serve liquor until 2AM on a Sunday! It is being promoted by High Society Events (the same guys who made Alive and more recently Whiskey Dix massive Monday night hotspots). Expect Sundays to be busy and nothing short of crazy with DJ Dow Jones.

-

Opera Ultralounge also boasts a public forum (the only club in Winnipeg to do so) where patrons can voice their experiences/accolades/complaints etc. about the club publicly. You can check that out and give it a try here: http://www.operaultralounge.ca/experience (no need to sign up as it automatically detects and links to your Facebook account).

-

-

Opera Ultralounge is aiming to be a service oriented establishment. There will be 11 VIP sections spread across two floors, discounted bottle service and VIP hosts who will help make your night out a memorable one. All of this makes Opera the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday, stag/stagette or any other reason you can drum up to have a night out with friends.

-

To inquire about how Opera can make your night out special or book a VIP booth/bottle service email vip@operaultralounge.ca, or call (204) 890-6555. also be sure to keep checking WinnipegNightlife.Ca for all the latest news on Opera and hopefully an exclusive preview once the club opens.

Interview By WinnipegNightlife.Ca Gest Writer: William “Winterpeg Wonkas” Vaillancourt

-

1-You told me you were on the road the last time that we spoke. Tell me a little about the tour or rather the tours that you perform this year.

-

Just made it home from an east coast tour. All the shows were really good. I got to do Zeds Dead & The Killabits infamous night which is called Bassmentality in Toronto at the Wrong Bar. It’s a packed night which resembles a metal night with people head banging and crowd surfing to the newest heavy bass lines. Montreal was a warehouse style party all night ran by the main Dubstep crews in Montreal. The opening DJs were all amazing producers and DJ’s and also Reso and Genetix were performing from the UK. I got to meet up with the guys from Jaime le Dubstep too. It’s a sick Montreal based Dubstep blog for whom i did my last mix. I also hit Ottawa, Blue Mountain, London, and Waterloo at Beta (such a crazy club from the huge sound system to the light show).

Now I’m home for a few days then I’ve got 2 weeks of shows from the ski towns in BC & Alberta to Saskatoon then Winnipeg!!!

-

2-I read a little about your accomplishments. You have been spinning since 1988 (crap I was barely 2 years old!)…

Ha, yeah I’ve been DJ’ing as long as most of the people that are at the show have been alive!!!

-

I’ve seen the music progress along the way but in the end it’s the same vibe with people dancing and having a really good time listening to beats. There have been so many memorable events from the many years at Shambhala, playing at the Canada house in Torino for the Winter Olympics, I got to play at the world famous Club Fabric in London 2 times which is always a crazy night and just meeting many of the people who make music that I looked up to and respected.

-

-

3-Moscow, Austria, Germany, Sweden, London, Iceland, Italy, Korea, Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, all over the U.S. and Canada(!!). You’ve been spinning in so many different areas/countries. Which one did you appreciate the most and why?

I appreciate all the places really for different reasons (from the big cities to the small towns). It’s funny the vibe once at the show is usually very similar. It’s so amazing getting to travel around the world and play music for people and get to see their perspective of the place, see the sights and check out the good breakfast and food spots.

-

-

4-How would you describe the differences between North American nights to South American and European events?

Well, the main thing is how long the clubs are open for. In Canada and the U.S, a lot of events end at 2-3 am where as in other countries the party goes all night. In Europe there was one club that had hairdressers and people getting hair cuts when partying. I’ve never seen that in Canada. Korea was crazy I thought it was going to be all Koreans but turned out most of the crowd were Canadians living out there and teaching English.

-

5-OK, so to go back in time, you moved to America in 1990 when your DJ career had just started. You came here for a passion that involves snow, a board and a daredevil temperament . Satisfied with your decision?

I moved to Whistler, Canada in 95 after I got into snowboarding in Austria in 94. I bought all the DVDs and Magazines and everyone was talking about Whistler with amazing pictures of the mountains. A deep tree runs with

its decisions. I’ve never looked back. My family even moved out with me. I’m now in Squamish and love this area. There’s so much good snowboarding, mountain biking, lakes, hiking, climbing and is close to lots of good shows.

6-Your skills in scratching lead you to be the one that EA Sports has chosen for the scratching in the video game “NBA Street Home Court”. Is there something you CAN’T do?

Ha! I’ve been getting more and more into DJ’ing music for TV, DVDSs and collaborating with people and scratching on their projects. It’s different than rocking shows and a good way to reach different crowds and be creative.

-

7-How would you describe your energy/style/flavor when you’re in action? (Behind the decks)

I try to cover many styles of music in my set. Right now I’m heavy on the Dubstep sound, but try to not just have one sound and take people on a journey through different sounds.

-

I try to contrast the sounds whether that be heavier or deeper , melodic, recognizable to brand new unheard tracks.

During the set will be lots of cuts and scratching too but I try to do it in a way so people don’t stop and stare but can keep dancing.

8-Personal info here. If you were a potato, would you prefer to be fried or mashed? Why?

Mashed. I always prefer mashing up stuff and adding things in there.

-

9-When did you get the “crush” for DJ’ing and who was your biggest influence?

My dad opened a record shop in 78 so I’ve been around music all my life. The first musical thing I got into was the drums and played in a band for a few years before discovering the turntables, electronic music and scratching in 1988.

-

Soo many influences from DJ’s that scratch (DJ Hype, Q’bert, Mix Master Mike) to mixing DJ’s, and many producers. With DJ’ing I’m really influenced by everything around me (even snowboarding, punk rock & hip hop).

-

10-Undeniable talent and musically versatile. What music style do you prefer spinning? If there is one…

The main styles I play are dubstep, glitch hop, drum and bass but throw in other bits of dancehall, reggae, hip hop , metal, UK funky, breaks, electro

-

I like to make it so the set appeals to a wide range of people and might even make them like a style of music they wouldn’t normally listen to.

-

11-What can we expect in 2011 from Mat the Alien. On and off the stage?

I’ve been working on lots of production and have some beats coming soon. We also had a baby who’s 8 months old so that’s keeping me busy. People in Whistler can catch me Tuesday nights at Really Good Tuesdays where I have been stopping by regularly

-

I’ve also been working lots on my DJ video set which is always progressing and a really fun creative outlet and adds a whole new dimension to my set. It has lots of remixes with the videos synced and funny mash ups and bits from movies and weird TV stuff.

-

12-Tell me more about yourself. Do you have any hobbies out of the musical one?

-

I’m really into snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking in the mountains and I even though I suck at it, skateboarding every now and then.

-

Thanks Mat!! Can’t wait to see yah on the 26 of March at the pyramid!!(be there folks!)
