Over the past twelve months, Winnipeg has seen some exciting changes occur in the nightlife scene. There have been some major nightclub closures (Vivid, Blush, The Estate, & Sonar) which have only further reinforced what most already know, nightlife in Winnipeg is a tough business. Despite the challenges associated with running a successful nightclub, there will always be a line up of ambitious entrepreneurs who will take their shot at owning such a lucrative and sought after business.

Since opening one year ago, Republic has undoubtedly become one of Winnipeg’s premiere nightclubs (it was even voted Winnipeg’s Best Nightclub in this years WinnipegNightlife.Ca Peoples Choice Awards). As most nightclubs tend to fade in popularity, Republic has evidently strayed from that trend and is more popular now then ever before. I personally attended a Saturday night at Republic a couple weeks ago and was shocked when the club reached capacity at 10:30PM! The key to Republic’s success seems to be a combination of a great location, hard working promoters, experienced management and in my personal opinion, the huge number of special events it has hosted.

Over the past year, Republic has played host to musical talents (such as Deadmau5, Marco V, Steve Aoki, Klaas, LMFAO, Wale, LA Riots, Dave Nada and many more ) celebrities (incl. models, movie/television stars, UFC fighters, socialites etc.) and special events (fashion shows, after parties, talent shows, charity events etc.).

In celebration of their “One Year Anniversary”, Republic has decided to bring in the “King Of Krunk” himself, Lil Jon. Lil Jon has being a huge influence on bring “Krunk” music to the mainstream and as both a rapper and producer has experienced massive success both commercially and in clubs across the world. Lil Jon has made some some of the biggest party tracks of the last decade so that should tell you how insane this party at Republic will be.

Another huge concert announcement for Winnipeg as the Black Eyed Peas have just released the news that they will make a stop at the MTS Centre on their “The E.N.D” world tour! This truly will not be a concert to miss. The Black Eyed Peas are unquestionably one of the biggest musical acts in the world and are known for putting on some of the best concerts around.

Take a good look at some of the info pasted below as well as the videos of some of BEP’s latest tunes (arguably some of there most successful releases to date). Although both Fergie and Will I. Am have had successful solo projects, it really is the Hip Hop/Pop/Electronic styled group work that has become so renowned. They have topped every major music chart around the world and in my opinion, will go down as one of the most influential musical acts of our generation.

Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling

I gotta feeling that a lot of you are going to be watching the Black Eyed Peas from the nosebleeds in mere months. BEP has announced the second leg of their North American tour, and for us Canadians, the new spate of dates proves Fergie Ferg wasn’t lying when she said she’d love us long time.

The tour begins with back-to-back shows in Toronto July 27 and 28, wrapping in Edmonton August 23. Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Calgary will all play host to the Peas in the interim (dates listed below).

The group debuted their new moves and quasi-futuristic space suits in Atlanta Feb. 4 and the first leg of their world tour ends April 11 in another Canadian destination, Vancouver. Before returning to North America, they’ll travel throughout the UK and Europe this summer.

Ticket info for this just-announced set of concerts has yet to be announced. But for those of you who prefer a concert going experience that involves hot-buttered popcorn and performers who are several stories tall, Cineplex is hosting a broadcast of BEP’s Los Angeles show March 30 in movie theatres across the country. Winnipeg promoters and DJ’s from “Ernie Booms Productions” have just announced their biggest show yet. Kid Sister is truly blowing up right right now with her energetic, electronic inspired hip hop style (check out the videos below if you haven’t heard any of her music). This show should be packed and tickets are expected to sell out ( the venue has a capacity of  400 people). Having this show in the lobby of Pantages (centrally located in Winnipeg) as opposed to a bar/club will be a nice change for a show like this. Kid Sister is Chicago. She makes rap music and works at a children’s clothing store slanging bibs and teething rings. Yes, her hype man J2K of Flosstradamus is her real brother, and yes that does rule. Together they took the Chicago music scene by storm rocking parties and causing all around dancefloor mayhem. Since the closure of Blush Ultraclub, there has been a lot of speculation about what will be taking over the prime piece of real estate it occupied (directly across from the MTS Centre in the heart of Winnipeg’s downtown). Time for speculation is now officially over as it has recently being announced that 4Play Sportsbar & Entertainment Centre will be opening in March 2010. What is most exciting to me about 4Play is the new concept of an “Entertainment Centre” that it is bringing to Winnipeg. 4Play will feature virtual golf, arcade machines and various other activities to keep you occupied when you visit (the best analogy I can give is a Chuckie Cheese for adults). The only other similar facility that I have ever been to is Schanks in Calgary and I had a great time!

From the business point of view I also believe that this is a smart move on behalf of the ownership. Blush was a beautiful nightclub in arguably the best location in the city but it struggled to consistently get people through its doors (special events were always packed and showed the clubs potential but its regular bar night were sledom busy). I personally believe a sportsbar is a great choice for the location for the following resons:

• As the Free Press states, a sports bar has the potential to be busy every day of the week instead of just weekends.
• Commonly makes a substantial amount of money from food in addition to beveages (additional revenue stream).
• Is less susceptable to violence (and therefore has reduced security costs) then a nightclub.
• Can better establish a relationships with customers (resulting in “regulars”).
• Can take advantage of the downtown lunch rush as well as the “after work drinks” demand.
• Caters to people of all ages on any night as opposed to the unwritten age crowds common at in a nightclub atmosphere.

It will be interesting to see what happens when4Play opens its doors with respect to the competition. Moxies, Boston Pizza, Rinkside & Tavern are all within walking distance and cater to the same crowd. Two local businessmen will be injecting some Las Vegas glam into the blossoming nightlife around the MTS Centre, with the opening next month of a new mega sports bar on Portage Avenue.

Jack Salvaggio and Bernie Cheater say their 4Play Sportsbar and Entertainment Zone will boast such Las Vegas-style features as a main-floor bar with a 24-foot projection screen and 100 theatre-style seats, and a second-floor games lounge with three giant golf/multi-sport simulators. They say the TV screen will be the biggest bar/lounge screen in Winnipeg and maybe even Western Canada.

The two bar-and-restaurant-industry veterans want to grab a bigger share of the area’s nightlife, which has roared back to life since the MTS Centre opened five years ago. They’re spending upwards of half a million dollars to convert their former Blush Ultraclub nightclub at Portage and Hargrave into a 19,000-square-foot, two-storey sports bar/restaurant/entertainment centre. Unlike Blush, which was only open on Friday and Saturday nights, 4Play will be open seven days a week from noon to 1 a.m.

“We’re not trying to put anybody else out of business,” Salvaggio said in an interview Wednesday, adding there’s more than enough business to go around on the roughly 180 nights of the year when there’s a hockey game, concert or entertainment event going on at the MTS Centre. Other downtown bar and restaurant operators agree.

“I think everybody downtown is busy before an (MTS) event,” said Denis Paulhus, general manager of the Boston Pizza restaurant and sports bar at cityplace. “If you’re not downtown before 5:30 (p.m.) and have a seat, you’re not going to get one. At least not here.”

It’s a similar story at the Elephant & Castle pub and restaurant in the Delta Winnipeg Hotel.

“Any concert night, we’re full,” general manager Dana Dandeneau said of the 180-seat venue. “There was a bit of concern when Boston Pizza opened, because it was right across the street. But it hasn’t hurt us at all.”

Dandeneau said 4Play’s opening shouldn’t hurt them either. And that’s Paulhus’s attitude, as well.

“If it brings more sports fans downtown, great!” he said.

Stefano Grande, executive director of the Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone, said another restaurant/bar is exactly what the area needs. He said a survey four years ago showed more downtown restaurants topped the wish list for most MTS Centre patrons. Salvaggio, who has been in the bar and restaurant business for more than 30 years, and Cheater, a real estate agent who used to be a part-owner of the former Chi-Chi’s restaurant next door to the old Winnipeg Arena, said they got some of their ideas for their new concept on a visit last year to Las Vegas.

“We looked at all the best sports bars and brought the best back here,” Salvaggio said.

He said their full-service restaurant should appeal to both the lunch-hour and after-work crowds. And offering things like sporting events and interactive sports and video games — 4Play will also have two 15-foot projection screens and 30 50-inch plasma TVs — should appeal to both youth and adult customers.

Grande said that’s the approach downtown bars and restaurants need to take because crowds in the area are still thin on non-event nights. “(They) can’t rely just on MTS Centre events. You also have to have a concept that appeals to downtown office workers and downtown residents.”

Twenty-eight-year-old real estate agent Steven Paulus is all of those things rolled up into one. Not only does he work downtown, he also lives there and attends lots of events at the MTS Centre. He said he’s looking forward to 4Play’s opening.

“It’s always nice to have more options,” he said, adding there’s still plenty of room for more bars and restaurants within easy walking distance of the MTS Centre.

Grande said what’s needed now is additional government incentives that will make it economically feasible for developers to redevelop some of the vacant buildings and surface parking lots near the arena.

Winnipeg’s Best Wing Night Reviews Volume 1

My good friend went to Australia for a year, and when she came back we met her at the airport, eager to go out and hear about her adventures overseas. The first thing she said while waiting for her luggage was, “Oh my god. I need some Smitty’s wings. I haven’t gone out for wings in over a year. If we don’t go for wings, I might let this jet lag get to me and cry.” So we went to Smitty’s. There is something about us Winnipeggers and wings. Maybe it’s because any night of the week you can go out somewhere, no matter if it’s +30 or -30, and grab some wings and beer with your friends just for the sake of wings. Or maybe it’s because they’re a good deal, and us Winnipeggers just love a good deal. No matter what the reason is, every night there is a wing night at a restaurant it is guaranteed to be packed. So as a true Winnipegger who absolutely loves wing nights in their entirety, I set out with my group of wing men to find the best of the best wing nights in Winnipeg.

My critics consisted of my regular wing night group: Joe, my boyfriend, a connoisseur of wings who’s ultimate goal in life is to make the best wings known to man, Jodry, a critic at heart who enjoys his wings and beer just as much as I do, Jay, the expert in hotness (wing hotness, of course), and myself, just a general wing lover. Grading each applicable venue on price, value, presentation, service and taste, we’ve come up with a guide that will keep any Winnipeg wing lover busy every night of the week.

I’ve heard mixed reviews on Hooters wings’ so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Our waitress was really friendly and offered great service, and the boys were smitten by the time she took our drink order. The wings were served really quickly which was surprising because we ordered 50 wings between the 4 of us, but they still were served to us within 15 to 20 minutes. Flavors need to be ordered in multiples of 10, so we had 911, BBQ, mild, honey garlic and Cajun. The presentation was excellent, I particularly liked the rolls of paper towels on the table and the celery served with the wings. The flavor that stood out for the entire table was the Cajun, with the ranch dip, it was absolutely delicious. The 911 was not as spicy as Jay (the spice expert) expected, but the flavor was still really good. The only thing that disappointed was the BBQ, which tasted closer to ketchup then BBQ sauce. The wings were a really good size with a substantial amount of meat on them, and between the 4 of us we barely polished off the 50 wings. Splitting the platter 4 ways there was enough for everyone, and working out to about $9 each it was a really good deal.

Right away I was impressed by the dollar off pints, I haven’t seen a deal on beer the same night as wing night ever before, and it was definitely a perk. The service was quick the night we went, but it was later then we usually go so it actually wasn’t as busy as normal. I have had experiences at the Tavern United when you wait quite a while for your beer, let alone your food. However, the wings were freshly served about 15 minutes after ordering and we were impressed. The flavours were really good, BBQ and Hot & Honey really standing out as the better flavours ordered. Jay again confirmed that the Buffalo was tasty, but not really all that spicy. The wings themselves were a decent size, but noticeably premade, double fried and bucket sauced. In the end, the wing crew came to the agreement that the wings seem to be your average bar food; they were good, but nothing spectacular if you are looking for really good wings on a wing night.

We reviewed Kelsey’s under different circumstances, but I decided to include it as an official review because of how impressed I was. We attended free wing night on January 21st, and on a night when you would expect the wings to suffer quality for the sake of quantity, they were excellent. Unfortunately, the flavor options we had were limited for this particular evening. However, they were all some of the best flavors we had so far, so I believe that any flavors that appealed to you would be equally as delicious. We had honey garlic, mild, BBQ, and hot. Jodry and I agreed that the honey garlic was some of the best tasted, and Joe found the mild wing to have one of the best wing flavors ever, one he’s been trying to duplicate ever since. The hot wing wasn’t really hot at all, but it did have more of a franks red hot type flavour then the mild. The wings were also very good quality, big with plenty of meat on them. Smitty’s is probably the most popular place to go for wings in Winnipeg, and no matter if the wings are good or bad, people will still be gathering there every Tuesday and Thursday. They are the best in Winnipeg for flavour variety and the variety in which you can order them, and at 44 cents a wing, you can’t really go wrong. The service is always quite speedy as well, even when they have a full house. They also have a decently spicy hot wing that upon request, can be made as hot as possible. I have a friend who once requested the cook make the most killer wing he could, and the wings he ate made his lips turn white. I wouldn’t recommend that, but if that’s your kind of thing, Smitty’s can do it. I personally am a big fan of their sweet chilli and BBQ wings, and Joe swears by their honey garlic. However, the wings themselves are small and not as meaty as the wings some other restaurants offer. Whatever Smitty’s lacks in wing quality, they make up with a good deal, good variety, and a comfortable lounge that has become a tradition among many groups of friends.

Within the next little while, my troop of wing goers will be tasting wings from places like Pony Corral, Dylans, Romani’s, Tony Roma’s, Big Guys, Carlos & Murphy’s, and Movado’s.

Winnipeg Psy has put together an awesome event to combine the best of both the “Rave” and “Club” worlds. Their latest event, Reload, will be hosted at both Pure Nightclub and the River Osborne Community Center which are literally across the street from each other (2 minute walk MAX). If you grab your ticket in advance you will be treated to 10 hours of music (covering almost all genres of electronic music) spread across 4 rooms in 2 venues for only $30!

Alcohol will be served at Pure so you will need to be 18+ to attend that venue. If you are not 18 however, you can still attend the party but are limited to only the River Osborne Community Center (which just a few months ago hosted the Countdown New Years Eve Rave). Alcohol will not be served at the ROCC but the party will be going until 6:00AM to make up for it!

Dado, aka Frédéric Holyszewski, repeatedly woos crowds and longtime fans to the beat of his new productions. These range from his solo projects as Deedrah, as he is known in the circuit for 15 years now, or the most recent of his bands formed little over 2 years ago, the KromeAngels. He stands to face anywhere between 5 to 30 thousand eager fans on a gig!!

Once in the scene in the mid 90s as a self-made rock band, Vision Quest, Dado met Christophe Drouillet with whom he would form the legendary group Transwave. Only 3 months later they release the first album under a small French label Transpact. In only 2 years they reached mind blowing success releasing 3 albums. In 1997 Dado created QuestionMark records. The first Deedrah album, Self-Oscillation, was released under this label, as well as three compilations The Groovebox, Anologique and Digitale. The first album Cypher was released with the cooperation of TWISTED Records UK. Under the QuestionMark’s label he would cooperate with artists like TSUYOSHI, SUZUKI, ASTRAL PROJECTION, SID SHANTI, AVI ALGRANATI, TOTAL ECLIPSE and also remixes for THE DELTA, HALLUCINOGEN, or KILLING JOKE. As if it were not enough, Dado also created another alias SYNTHETIC initially releasing the fantastic Metalgear EP with TWISTED Records. later releasing a first album on SOLSTICE MUSIC and not the least, DANDANdDADO where the epic Diamond Dust came to life!

Dado also came together with DMT NAKOV and SERGE SOUQUE of Total Eclipse to form GBU who played in the most important festivals of the techno scene like sonica, the Glade Festival and the Solstice music festival in Tokyo . Later he was contracted by Sony to compose the opening tune and sound effects of the Ps2 game Grand Turismo 3 .

Here’s a huge announcement for Winnipeg’s Hip Hop community. Clipse is an extremely talented rap duo that has collaborated with the biggest in the game and being on the top of the charts multiple times. I personally think both Pusha T and Malice have incredible flow and despite how much success they have had, I do believe they are two of the most underestimated rappers ever. Check out the videos below and I am sure you will agree.

As proven many times before The Pyramid Cabaret is an awesome venue for a smaller hip hop show like this one. In late 2009 Swollen Members put on an incredible show at the same venue (tons of crowd surfing, stage diving and freestyling) and Raekwon of The Wu Tang Clan is set to do the same thing next week. One of Winnipeg’s biggest DJ’s, DJ Co-op, will be opening the show along with a couple other local hosts and DJ’s who I am not familiar with.

This show will sell out no question. Make sure to grab your tickets as soon as possible from The Urban Bakery or Urban Boutique. Ticket prices are extremely reasonable which confirms to me once again that we are incredibly spoiled in Winnipeg with the level of talent we get to see for the price we pay and size of our city.

Hailing from Virginia, Clipse — brothers Pusha T and Malice — were one of the first artists to associate with the Neptunes. The Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams first met the duo in the early ’90s, was very impressed by their talents. Williams and partner Chad Hugo stepped behind the boards and produced Lord Willin’, Clipse’s 2002 full-length debut, released through Star Trak/Arista. On the strength of “Grindin’,” the album hit the Top Ten of the R&B/Hip-Hop and Billboard 200 charts and eventually went gold. The Sony-BMG merger threw the follow-up into limbo and sparked a long bout of legal snags between Clipse and their new parent label, Jive. While the delay was going on, Clipse issued a series of mixtapes and set up their Re-Up label. The label disputes were eventually cleared up, and Hell Hath No Fury — a lean, mean album, featuring the Neptunes and the MC’ing duo at the top of their game — was finally released on November 28, 2006. Almost unanimously hailed by critics, it also reached number 14 on the Billboard 200. Clipse later signed with Columbia for Til the Casket Drops which just released in November 2009. The album’s list of collaborators included the Neptunes, Rick Rubin, the Hitmen, Kanye West, Cam’ron and Keri Hilson. Combining an even mix of maturity and playfulness, the Clipse’s future remains as prosperous as ever. With Til the Casket Drops serving as a return to grace, there’s proof positive that Pusha T and Malice still have much to live for.

After the the unfortunate canceling of Pauly D’s appearance at Hi Fi Club announced last week, Republic has saved the day (and made the smart move to capitalize on Jersey Shore’s popularity) by bringing in Pauly D themselves. Republic already hosted J-Woww (another Jersey Shore character) this past weekend and from what I heard the place  reached capacity by 11:00PM (leaving hundreds of people left outside in the cold). Think what you want about these “Guido’s and Guidettes” but it has now been proven that they can pack a club and make for a pretty insane party!

Whether you like it or not, MTV’s new reality TV show Jersey Shore has quickly become one of the most popular and talked about shows on television. The concept behind Jersey Shore is that it places 8 Italian Americans in a beach house and camera crews follow them around as they work, party and interact with each other. Massive controversy has surrounded the show (some sponsors and advertisers have even pulled their contracts). Critics have stated that Jersey Shore negatively reflects Italian Americans, promotes disrespect towards females and glorifies dangerous and unethical behavior.

DJ Pauly D is one of the 8 main characters of Jersey Shore and unquestionably one of the most charismatic in the house. Although I am not too familiar with him as a DJ, it looks as though he primarily plays Rap/Hip Hop/R&B/Top 40 type music. For me, part of the attraction of this event will be to see how Pauly truly performs behind the decks. I also suspect that many people will show up to this show simply to see Pauly and hopefully get a picture or two. What can be guaranteed is that Republic will be packed (likely with a lot of girls) and Winnipeg’s own DJ Dow Jones will play a great set as usual. Should be a great party!

Pauly D is Rhode Island’s most well known DJ and keeps a tanning bed in his house. He orders gel by the case and does his hair twice a day–once in the morning and once before hitting the town. Pauly’s charismatic personality has the ability to control and please any crowd. This Italian-American DJ is definitely a “ladies-man”, women have often packed the local night spots just to watch him spin. What he is able to do with his hands and two turntables has been described as “utterly incredible”.
