Please Read First - A Note About “Raves”
-
I know when the word “Rave” is mentioned it always stirs a lot of controversy so I thought that making a post addressing this topic is important. Let’s start off with a definition from Wikipedia:
-
A Rave is a term in use since the 1980s, to describe dance parties (often all-night events) with fast-paced electronic music and light shows.
-
First off I HATE the word “Rave” and when I describe events that many people consider being “Raves” I never use that word. The word has a lot of negative connotations that are associated with it like Drugs, Crime, and Unsafe Sex. It is this reputation that I think keeps a very intelligent and advanced genre of music “underground” instead of letting it become more mainstream and socially accepted.
-
I am sure that many of you are asking “If you hate the word Rave so much, then why are you titling many local events as Raves on your website?” This is a valid question. the reason I am doing this is because this is still a very common term used today to describe dance parties, events, DJ shows, and many more nightlife activities. Chances are, if people are seeking information about this topic on the internet, this is the term that they will use.
-
The goal of this website is to provide factual, up to date and relevant information pertaining to the Winnipeg Nightlife Scene. I believe that by using the term “Rave” to describe certain events, they will be best described to the masses. Therefore all events that are all night dance parties, Dj shows/concerts, and electronic music events will be classified as “Raves”.

I am curious to hear what people have to say about this and I am not trying to claim to be an expert on the subject. Please leave a comment on the post or Contact Us with your thoughts.

good article. ive seen people at a club with a dj saying its their first rave. its a pretty loose term that gets thrown around a lot and has a lot of negativity attached to it. rave is dead for the most part, but let the all night dance parties carry on…
“Chances are, if people are seeking information about this topic on the internet, this is the term that they will use.”
To be more specific, I searched for “Winnipeg rave Newyears”.
Very good article!
